Spotted moving through the exhibit hall at DMA 08 Monday morning: Vinod Gupta, the founder of infoGroup, nee infoUSA. Gupta, as watchers of the compiled industry may recall, stepped down from the company’s chairman position in July and relinquished his CEO title in August.

The Dish on My Dinner

As soon as I saw the plates–glass chargers with gold beaded trim–I knew this wasn’t going to be your typical rubber chicken industry dinner.


Sure, it was chicken-but it was Roasted Breast of Petaluma Chicken, served with a Warm Portobello Tart with Vine Ripened Tomate Fondue. It also came with a Green Bean Bouquet, and was in a Chardonnay and Chicken Jus.


Where was I? At the Direct Marketing Educational Foundation dinner and auctions in the swanky Bellagio hotel on the Vegas strip on Saturday. more

Recession Should Be Time For Minor League Sports To Shine

I have friends who work for the Arena Football League who are going to be ticked that I clumped their brand of football in with minor league sports. But there is a point to be made here.


If you are a minor or obscure league (pipe down, AFL fans), you need to take advantage during this - dare I finally call it that - economic recession.

DMA08: Here We Go Again

Another October, another DMA annual conference.


This is probably about the 11th or 12th one of these shindigs I’ve winged my way to. San Francisco. Chicago, Dallas. New Orleans. Toronto. Vegas. After a while, they all blur together. Still, at least we’re not in Orlando. (I’m not a state-of-mouse hater. But let’s face it, that last Orlando show wasn’t magical, to use the Disney vernacular.)

Hoop Dreams The Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal reports on a new multiyear marketing partnership between Hewlett-Packard and the National Basketball Association. The deal will involve joint technology initiatives and is HP’s first such venture with a pro sports league.


The Call of Africa Kenya will spend an extra billion shillings this year on marketing to attract more tourists, according to Reuters Africa.
