Giving Up Facebook For Lent

I love Facebook, but recently, it’s been more of an annoyance than a fun place to be. It’s not just the marketing messages (which I’m guilty of, too, as the creator and moderator of the Chief Marketer Network fan page), but other factors that have made me my own worst enemy on Facebook (adding long-lost friends who in reality I wish remained long-lost, friend requests from colleagues I’ve yet to meet in person, and just seeing how nasty people can be to each other).

So I decided to give up Facebook for Lent (if not all together), and I think it’s going to be easy. I found out it wasn’t an original idea - college students did it back in the day when Facebook was a college-student-only haven. But with that in mind, there are some lessons out there on how to give up Facebook for Lent. more

Iggy Pop Can’t Get Insurance From The Firm He Pitches

Better be careful if you live in the UK and sing too loud (or too often) in your car. Certain insurance companies may not cover you. Especially if you do a mean karaoke. Check out this story. It’s funny and sad at the same time. The word duplicitous comes to mind.

While the company, Swiftcover, admits it does not insure those in the music or entertainment industry for car insurance, it sees no problem with them representing their online insurance business as a paid spokesperson. Strange, but true. Come on, I can’t make this stuff up.

Support Your Local Merchant, or Buy Cheap?

I grew up in the town of Fairfield, Connecticut, which seemed to be a lot more blue collar and down-to-earth when I was a kid (at least compared to the tony town of New Canaan, where I went to high school as the “privileged” son of a New Canaan Public Schools teacher). And off and on as big-box stores come to Fairfield, the “buy local” battle cry has been shouted.

There’s no big boxes opening soon (heck, it lost its Linens N’ Things), but The Connecticut Post says “buy local” is being trumpeted again.

It’s probably too late for a lot of small merchants in this and Anytown, USA. more

Time to Get Real About Funding the USPS

It seems just a bit precious for four House members to sponsor a nonbinding resolution calling for the U.S. Postal Service to “take all appropriate measures” to keep delivering mail six days a week but not offering any substantial help to do so.
