Why the Minnesota Vikings Just Became the NFL’s Most-Annoying Team

It’s not because they signed Brett Favre, the on-again, off-again NFL journeyman quarterback who has brought his three-ring circus of self importance to Minneapolis. It’s because the Minnesota Vikings are letting the world know via its Website, in many different ways, that the future Hall-of-Famer will be under center this fall.

But as annoying as it is, it may be a very good marketing move for the Vikings… even if it seems the only people other than the team who are thrilled about Favre’s latest un-retirement are the team’s ownership, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, and Reebok.

It starts with the splash page, ends at the e-commerce store, and has plenty of All-Favre, All-The-Time content in the middle.

Plus they’re using a pretty catchy catch-phrase: “Purple is the new Green” to get Favre fans to upgrade their gameday wardrobe. And, of course, to get Vikings fans to jump on the Favre bandwagon.

But are Vikings fans ready to accept someone why has been the enemy for more than a decade? Tough to tell. They don’t have a place on their own where fans can sound off (though they do have a Facebook presence). But they can listen to what’s being said on blogs like this one.

  1. Given the money brought in by NFL merchandise, you have to give it to the Vikings for getting on the stick. They may only have 5-6 months to cash in on #4 jerseys before Favre retires and shows up on another team.

As far as Viking fans are concerned, my heart goes out to them and the 4 Super Bowl appearances that left them empty handed. For all the talk of the Chicago Cub drought, I’ll wager there’s more than enough Purple People Eaters who’d be willing to trade the farm in on a trophy and parade across the Twin Cities.

And I think the markets of the NFL Central have to like the attention they’ll be getting from a suddenly having 3 very high profile QB’s with Cutler in Chicago, Favre in Minnesota and of course Rodgers in Green Bay.

I see that phrase from ‘Starsky and Hutch’ come back up again…

‘Your stock just went up in my book, my friend.’

  2. Favre has been horrible for quite some time. When he couldn’t get the Packers to the Super Bowl two years ago, bowing to the Giants in the NFC Championship game at frigid Lambeau Field, that was his last gasp as an NFL quarterback. Ever since, he has been his own three-ring circus, full of ifs, maybes, and I’ll get back to yous. He is an interception machine.

Brett, do us all a favor and retire … AGAIN AND FOR THE FINAL TIME!!!!!!!!!
