I Can’t Help You, Popular Club Secretaries

popularclub.jpgOne of the top stories on the Multichannel Merchant Website this year is a news item, Fingerhut buys Popular Club. Unfortunately, it’s an 11-year-old article, and as such, way out of date.

Why is it so, uh, popular today? It seems Popular Club, which has changed hands a few times, is out of commission. And some folks who have unfinished business with it are desperate to get in touch with the company. more

Is Social Media Worth the Hype?

The video below was played yesterday at Shop.org’s annual summit, between keynotes delivered by Terry Lundgren of Macy’s and Sucharita Mulpuru of Forrester Research. It’s a video I’ve seen before - matter of fact a Facebook friend posted it to her newsfeed recently when she got hired in a sales position with a social media consultancy.

Now of course it built some excitement for social media. Just play it and see. The upbeat music, the positive facts about social media usage, and so forth.

The problem is, we’re all missing the boat with social media. And for merchants, social media may not be 100% worth the hype. more

How Are We Measuring Social Media?

Macy’s president/CEO Terry Lundgren said today that there are more than 75,000 fans of his company’s Facebook page. But is that a fair number to use to judge its success?

It’s a huge number for a two-month-old group. But how many of the group’s members really are fans of Macy’s (you don’t need to qualify to join a group), and how is Macy’s using its Facebook page to engage its fans? more

More Woes for USPS FSS

The U.S. Postal Service said last month that it’s adding nearly 300 zip codes to the list of areas to be served by the flats sequencing system. (FSS is supposed to cut down on the labor required to sort and deliver flat mail.)

Blogger Dead Tree Edition reports that USPS is continuing to install the FSS machines, even though the system just fell short of standards for the second time in an acceptance test. The throughput rate did improve from a test in late 2008, but it was still 23% short of the standard. more
