E-mails We Don’t Love: Terrain

We all know that more and more ISPs and e-mail servers are blocking images by default. We also know that it’s very simple to write an HTML tag for images so that some sort of description appears in lieu of the blocked images to encourage recipients to click the little in-box button allowing the images to be viewed.

Why, then, does horticultural retailer Terrain send out an e-mail that, with images blocked, looks like this:

Can Kmart Build Loyalty with a Laundromat?

Kmart has picked a new store opening June 5 to house its first public washers and dryers in an Iowa City location based on space and community demographics. The demographics of the shoppers must have been the top decision in where to open the store as not everyone would want to tote bags of laundry to Kmart.

But Kmart can also cater to the typical Laundromat goer who may not be in the mood to shop because people can access the 31 washers and 30 dryers from both inside the store and from a separate storefront.

The Future of Fan/Hate Mail?

mcm_may2010_fc.jpgWe got our first video e-mail letter to the editor last week about Tim Parry’s May cover story, The Value of Video.

Well, it wasn’t really a letter to the editor, since the e-mail went directly to Tim. The subject line was “Tim, I loved the article on Video in the May issue, but I am concerned …..” The body of the e-mail had a photo of the sender with a video link to play. more

Book Trailer Awards: Does Anyone Else Think Thomas Pynchon Sounds Like The Dude?

the-dude.pngMore proof, in case you needed it, that this is truly a multichannel world: Tonight publishing company Melville House will sponsor an awards event for the best book trailers.

Book trailers are short video clips promoting books. You can find them on Amazon.com and YouTube, among other Websites. Publishing companies have long availed themselves of the mass media to try to sell books (I remember seeing Jacqueline Susann on The Merv Griffin Show when I was a kid), but even then the authors were using words to sell words. Now the video images, and concept, are as important as the words in persuading people to buy something to read.

Social Media Meets Mainstream TV (Again)

Is CBS a hip genius in touch with the 21st century? We’ll find out soon. It picked up the social media phenomenon “Shit My Dad Says” as a part of its fall line-up. But will it fly, or will it just be, um, a comedy starring William Shatner and shark-jumping sitcom-killers Nicole Sullivan and Will Sasso?

No doubt that Justin Halpern struck gold when he started tweeting last August about living with his father. Then he spun it off into a Website and a Facebook fan page to complete the social media phenomenon. And now, it’s in a convenient book form. more

E-mails We Love: Bumper Edition

Because it’s been a while since I put together an E-mails We Love post, and because my inbox is getting crowded with lovable e-mails I’ve saved, let’s look at some notable missives from the past several weeks.

giggle.pngThe first one, which arrived in the run-up to Easter, was from Giggle, an upscale retailer of merchandise for babies. The subject line, “bunnies galore,” may not seem that remarkable, until you consider that it arrived amid a welter of messages along the lines of “Last week to save 10% on your Easter baskets!” and “Hurry NOW for Easter delivery!” It was short, it was cute, and it was in keeping with the Giggle brand, down to the lack of initial caps, which mimicked the all-lowercase Giggle logo. (I did find the lack of capitalization a bit twee, but that may just be the obsessive-compulsive copyeditor in me.) The message itself had photos of and links to a dozen adorable rabbit-related products.
