How Will Groupon Respond to Super Bowl Ad Backlash?

Remember when you were a toddler, and you thought you could make your mom’s friends laugh by doing something you really didn’t know was inappropriate, disgusting or offensive? And then your mom slapped you across the behind (or face, if your mom was old school) and scolded you with the phrase, “that’s not funny?”

Thanks to its mock PSA commercials it ran during the Super Bowl, Groupon - the site that offers deal-of-the-day coupons in several communities here and abroad - was sent to bed without any fish curry:

Emails We Love: Super Bowl Edition

picture-1.pngNo, I didn’t tune in to the Super Bowl, not even for the commercials (though I was glued to the Puppy Bowl). But two Super Bowl-themed emails, from retailers whose demographic was probably not much more interested in the game than I was, did catch my eye.

The World Is Flat, Pluto Is a Planet ….

Everything in this word is fluid - as should be our attitudes and thought logic patterns to properly adjust with the times. It’s tough for me see people say that they would w/o question keep their clients out of the Superbowl. I actually don’t sit on either side of the fence, but I fluidly move to the side that makes sense for any particular brand. Each brand has different needs, and they are all at different places in their maturation process. Also, fiscal responsibility is first and foremost when it comes to devising a comprehensive IMC plan.

The world around us is just imagination. I think we all learned that lesson when everyone’s belief structures were shattered as everything they had been taught about money their whole life changed in the blink of an eye.

I would love to have a gentlemen’s debate with Grant on this subject - touche…. Your up first Boss

Super Bowl Ads=Super Waste of $$$

Yes, If I had a client who wanted to run ads during the big game, I’d counsel otherwise. Here’s a nice little video courtesy of CNBC of who pulled out from advertising this year.

Social media and targeted web ads are where some of last year’s advertisers are shifting their budgets. Of course, some main-stays will continue to spend millions to entertain and persuade us. Alas, they do not often sell us.

While the ads and their aftermath often create buzz, buzz without business is just noise. VERY expensive static at that!

107 Million Hellos - What Comes Next?

Here we go again. How could they spend the money? What are they thinking? Let me be honest right out of the gate - I don’t know what they’re thinking. :) However, I can tell you what they should be thinking. Along with perhaps how brands are finely, wisely using the SuperBowl as an integral part of their well-thought out, long term IMC strategy.

It’s no surprise that a brand team can see 106.5 million viewers - give or take a few million - as a great platform to say hello in this conversational marketplace. It’s what comes next that is so vitally important. You’ve heard me say for eons that we’re social creatures and we really only have one notion of a relationship. What do I mean when i say that, and why does it matter? Here’s some context. more
